How to ask for a pay raise

Takeaway: Do you feel underpaid? Before you jump at the first job offer that comes your way, try to negotiate a pay raise. With the proper preparation, you better your chances at getting that salary boost...or find out if it really is time to go.

If you are convinced that you’re worth more than you’re being paid, before you jump at the first offer that comes your way or even start looking for that new job, try negotiating a raise. With the proper preparation, you can either convince your employer you’re worth the investment or see if it really is time to move on to greener pastures.

To stay or not to stay
If you do feel underpaid, first consider whether you want a new job or if you simply want more money. While a new job can be enticing, there are distinct advantages to remaining with your existing employer, chief of which are familiarity and comfort. You know how your current employer works and vice versa. Going to a new employer means selling yourself anew to strangers, something that you might not have done for a while and could find difficult. As much as I deplore the use of clichés, "Better the devil you know" and "The grass is not always greener" can hold true in this situation.

A cautionary tale for job hoppers
Here’s one example of trying to jump ship but hitting the water instead. A friend of mine was recently offered a new position with better pay, weekends off, a great staff discount scheme, and less responsibility. Not surprisingly, she jumped at the chance. She gave her current employer a month's notice and accepted the new post. She arrived home after her last day at work, looking forward to her new job. That evening, however, she received a call from her new employer. They had undergone a change of heart (and management) and had decided that her services would not be required.

Having trained her replacement and set her to work, my friend no longer had a job to go back to and is currently unemployed. While I recognize that this type of employment practice is not the norm, and that some work situations make a job change the only viable option, keep in mind that changing jobs doesn’t always mean a change for the better. If pay is the only issue, explore the possibility of a raise with your present employer before making for the exits.

Although my friend had some minor issues with the way her employer did things and wanted a raise, overall she was treated well. When what seemed like a good deal came along, she jumped at it instead of first talking to her current employer about a raise. With a little negotiation, she might have been able to get a raise and keep her original job.

Preparation is everything
If you do decide to try to negotiate a raise, the most important thing is to do your homework. You need to consider and have good answers ready for the following questions:

* Why do you want more money?
* Why should your employer give you more?
* What benefit can you provide in return for more money?
* How can your employer recoup the cost?
* What would be the consequences of not getting a pay raise?
* Would you be prepared to leave if you didn't get the pay raise?
* Would the company care if you left, or would they be happy to let you go?

Make the sales pitch
These questions follow the framework of a classic sales pitch. To successfully negotiate a pay raise, you need to convince your boss that such an increase represents an investment for your organization, not merely an additional cost. Your employer could find someone else to do your job but more cheaply. Can you offer something better than your competition?

When the time comes to negotiate your raise, have all your facts ready and make your pitch. Make your value to your organization clear. For example, have a selection of suggestions or ideas that you can offer in return for your pay raise. These can include plans for the future and ways that you can simplify, expand, or diversify your department that will make more money, cost less money, save time, or increase productivity. The more your employer sees how valuable you are, the better your chances of reaping the rewards. If your negotiations take a bad turn, however, here’s word of warning. Be careful before you play the resignation card. Doing so could backfire on you—especially if you aren’t really valued by your organization.

If you do your homework properly, you have a great chance of getting the raise you want as well as enabling your boss to see a new side of you, one that says, “I can do things for this company, so sit up and take notice!”
Do you have a story about asking for a raise? We want to hear about it. Whether it was a failure or a resounding success, how did you approach your boss about receiving a raise? Post a comment or write to Jeff Dray and share your experiences.

BNP on IT spree

BNP on IT spree

23 July 2008

Simon Mortlock

It seems Singapore’s IT jobs bonanza is still far from over, with BNP Paribas Private Bank the latest employer on the hunt for techies. The French firm is recruiting about 100 new staff as it sets up an IT development hub in the city state.

Ricardo Sanchez-Moreno, chief operating officer of the private bank in Asia, tells us that candidates with knowledge of vendor-based systems (such as Olympic, AAA, Assist and Papyrus) are most in demand, with private banking experience also beneficial.

“We are mainly looking for project managers, business analysts, software engineers and developers to support the hub in its application development and system integration of standard applications for private banking,” he says.

The bulk of the IT developers will be new recruits, and hiring will happen over the next 14 to 18 months. Sanchez-Moreno explains: “The number of transfers from other BNP Paribas locations will be minimal. Recruitment will take place in Singapore, and abroad if there are profiles for which we can’t find locally suitable candidates.”

Matt Dunham, managing director of recruitment company Confero, says large banks in Singapore recruit senior developers from a variety of countries – including India, Australia, the US and UK – because growing demand means there aren’t enough local people to fill the vacancies.

While front-office developer jobs are more sought after and higher paid, Dunham says they come with additional stress. “Banks are more selective about front-office recruitment and need people who understand and can communicate with the business. They want people who can communicate with fast talking traders,” he adds.

The growth of Singapore as a global private banking centre was a major factor in BNP’s decision to expand its IT headcount there. “We wanted to set up our global hub in a country that had a reliable telecommunications infrastructure and offered a large pool of highly qualified professionals in the IT domain at competitive rates,” explains Sanchez-Moreno.

Worst job in the world

My worst job and the other guys job...
It was the mid 80's. Way before IT for me. I worked in a plant that processed chickens. I basically stood on the prod line and packed chicken parts on swing shift. To make it worse? I was trying to be a 100% commissioned Insurance Salesman during the day and I sucked at it. From suit to rubber boots and a long butchers smock with dinner (Mickey D's) thrown in between.

But the guy who had the worst job there? He sat on a stool in a rain suit with a charcoal respirator on all day. He slit the throat of EVERY bird (thousands a day) that came in that place just after they got an electrical shock to knock them out. They bled on to the floor which was basically a big plastic catch basin with a drain in the middle. By lunch time, the blood had coagulated (sp?) enough that it would no longer drain and was a foot deep where he was sitting. A hose with hot water was used to wash it all down in to the 250 gallons containers below which were then hauled off to the dog/cat food plant (I assume). By the end of the day, being within 10 feet of that guy made you want to vomit.

Bonding dinner

Friday evening, our colleagues planned to have a dinner for those assigned to work in Philippines for the next 3 weeks.

In the morning, attended a course on SuSE Linux at a training centre with our company shareholder. The class talk about the functionalities and benefits of SuSE Linux. The presenter mentioned that SuSE is the only Linux platform recognized by Microsoft as they had a collaboration for open source development. So assuming your business need to run Linux servers in Windows environment, Microsoft can provide the SuSE Linux expertise and the support. However if you are using other platform of Linux OSes, Microsoft would not provide any support.

The class taught us how to install the SuSE Linux OS and creating user accounts. Training ended at 1230, so headed back to office. Back at office, the female engineer had gone back Malaysia and another engineer had diarrhea so could not have dinner with us. After work we headed to Geylang for steamboat, as recommended by my china colleague. 6 engineers including me and 2 ladies , the wife of my team lead and girlfriend of the china colleague came.

The restaurant is located beside the famous Beef Hor Fun. They have only 2 soup bases, herbal and Ma La spicy base. This is my first time trying Ma La, and its too much for me. The meat is ala carte style where you need to place order and delivered on a trolley. Wherelse vegetables, cold dishes were free for all to take. I spent most of my time eating vegetables as the meat portion is limited as you need to place orders.

Meat
Beef
Pork
Fish
pig kidneys
crabs
prawns
Beef intestines.

Its a inter-national dinner as we have Chineses, Malaysians, Indians, Burmese and me as only Singaporean. Its the first for my Indian colleague to try prawns and crabs, and he loved crabs alot. During the dinner, my Indian colleague was telling me interesting and life-threatening stories when he was younger. The billed was $24/pax w/o drinks, GST and service charge. I think its alittle too expensive for small variety and no free flow drinks.

Saturday morning had classes on Financial Planning. The lecturer is a Doctorate with years of experience in the Insurance Industry. He brought his audience to understand the importance of financial literacy, sharing real-case scenarios and jokes.I feel they should teach financial literacy in Secondary school, so the students are able to plan their finances. How much to save for overseas degree programme, start a business ...

Back to school after so many years

Last Thursday had my first lesson "Introduction to C++ Programming".

Prior that, my team lead and I were at the Data Centre to resolve a faulty router, luckily was not late for class. This is the second visit this week with another migration this Sunday morning, which would be the third time.

The road heading towards SIM is very jammed as most are heading home or going classes. On the bus saw runners from the nearby Maju camp having an evening run. It brought back memories when I could do a slow but continuous 5km jog. Now in the work force, chasing buses is the only sprinting I do LOL. The ability to squeeze on the buses and trains is also a skill.

Those time, we could hear commanders shouting to those "walkers"; WALK SOME MORE, WALK SOME MORE!" So those walkers would jog another 100ms before walking again and hear that familiar voice again beckoning them to run again.

Class was at 730pm reached there earlier. The lecture hall is around 1/3 the size of lecture halls in Polys. Surprisingly, not all the students are working full time as I assumed, as there were some students in berms and not carrying any bags. There was also quite a number of girls and happened to be in the same class as my campmate Benson. Sitting beside me is an ASK, he was using Mac Book Air, it was freaking slim. Even my wallet is thick than the Air when closed.

The lecturer is an Indian guy with a very comical look. Benson mentioned he looked like Mr Bean. The lesson was not really boring as compared to poly. Guessed the lecturer used real-life examples and the audience are more matured and able to pickup fast. Class ended at 10pm and it started to rain. The bus-stop is very crowded. Reached home at 11pm.

Which Dark Knight Character Are You?

Which Dark Knight Character Are You?

You are Rachel Dawes. You tend to get yourself into unbelievably crazy situations, but you are always safe by the end of the day- with a little help by friends, of course! You are not a complete damsel in distress, but you do rely on others for a lot. Your goodness and integrity can not be matched by anyone else, and people respect you because you are always honest and true to your word. You are not manipulated easily, and go the extra mile for causes you believe in. When you say you are going to do something, you mean it- and nothing will get in your way!

Barclays to offshore 1,800 IT jobs

Barclays is to cut 1,800 IT posts in the United Kingdom as part of plans to create centrally managed technology "centers of excellence" in key offshore locations around the globe.

The global infrastructure and service delivery (GISD) roles will be scrapped in the United Kingdom and new jobs created in Hungary, India and Singapore over the next two years, with 700 U.K. posts to be lost by September this year.

By 2010 the number of U.K. tech jobs at Barclays will be reduced by 1,800, a figure that includes IT contractors as well as employees. That will leave 1,000 GISD jobs remaining in the United Kingdom, based in Cheshire and London.

This will allow Barclays to create around 1,700 new roles offshore in global technology centers of excellence.

Most of the affected U.K. tech staff will either be redeployed or offered voluntary redundancy packages. Fewer than 50 staff are expected to face compulsory redundancy out of the 700 posts initially affected this year, according to the trade union Unite, which said future growth would further reduce losses.

But Unite warned of higher levels of redundancies in the following years, as many contractor posts will have already been filled by redeployments.

Keith Brookes, national secretary for Barclays at Unite, said: "We can avoid heavy duty compulsory redundancies because of the long lead time on the talks between Barclays and the union.

"The move is inevitable but we have to ensure that the [United Kingdom] is maintained as a center of excellence and we have that commitment from the bank."

He said the majority of the redeployed staff would enter jobs at the same level and in the same locations.

Unite asked for all affected staff to be given three months working notice and three months paid redundancy notice, and for redundant staff seeking retraining externally to be given a £2,000 (US$3,974) allowance.

Barclays has also promised there will be no more tech job losses this year outside of the offshoring initiative, Unite says.

A spokeswoman for Barclays said: "Barclays ambition is to become one of a handful of universal banks leading the global financial services industry, helping our customers and clients throughout the world to achieve their goals.

"We need to transform to a global organization, able to serve the needs of our customers and clients who have operations around the world.

"As far as possible, we will manage the reduction in headcount by reducing the number of contractors and temps we employ."

You can be a billionaire in Zimbawae

Zimbabwe introduces 100-billion-dollar note Sat Jul 19, 4:58 AM ET

HARARE (AFP) - Zimbabwe, grappling with a record 2.2 million percent inflation, has introduced a new 100-billion-dollar bank note in a bid to tackle rampant cash shortages, the central bank said Saturday.

The new note will go into circulation on Monday, the bank said in a statement cited by state media, joining about half a dozen new high denomination notes already issued this year.

In January, a 10-million-dollar note was issued, then a 50-million-dollar note in April. In May, notes for 100 million and 250 million dollars were issued, swiftly followed by those for five billion, 25 billion and 50 billion.

The southern African nation, currently gripped by a post-election crisis, has been ravaged by hyperinflation which shot up from 165,000 percent in February to 2.2 million in June.

Independent economists however believe the official inflation figure is grossly understated, estimating it could be running between 10 million and 15 million percent.

Zimbabwe's chronic economic crisis has left at least 80 percent of the population living below the poverty threshold and mass shortages of basic goods in shops.

Pity the citizens there, Singaporeans ought to be more grateful.

About 1,000 Singaporeans give up their citizenship each year

SINGAPORE: In the last three years, an average of 1,000 Singaporeans gave up their citizenship each year.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said their reasons for doing so vary, and these range from marriage to foreigners, to yearning for a different environment.

Most of them took up new citizenship in countries in Southeast Asia, the United States and Australia.

Mr Wong gave this update in reply to a written question from Non—Constituency MP Sylvia Lim.

She had asked how many Singapore citizens emigrated from Singapore in the last three years, the countries they emigrated to and their reasons for doing so.

Mr Wong said those who emigrate generally do not declare this to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority when they leave.

So the only available data which gives an indication of the number of emigrants from Singapore is the number of Singaporeans who have given up their citizenship and left Singapore. — CNA/vm

Fastest Supercomputer in the world !!!

System Name Roadrunner
Site DOE/NNSA/LANL
System Family IBM Cluster
System Model BladeCenter QS22 Cluster
Computer BladeCenter QS22/LS21 Cluster, PowerXCell 8i 3.2 Ghz / Opteron DC 1.8 GHz , Voltaire Infiniband
Vendor IBM
Application area Not Specified
Installation Year 2008

Operating System Linux
Interconnect Infiniband
Processor PowerXCell 8i 3200 MHz (12.8 GFlops)

In 2006, the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration selected Los Alamos National Laboratory as the development site for Roadrunner and IBM as the computer’s designer and builder. Roadrunner, named after the New Mexico state bird, cost about $100 million, and was a three-phase project to deliver the world’s first “hybrid” supercomputer – one powerful enough to operate at one petaflop (one thousand trillion calculations per second). That’s twice as fast as the current No.1 rated IBM Blue Gene system at Lawrence Livermore National Lab – itself nearly three times faster than the leading contenders on the current TOP 500 list of worldwide supercomputers.

* Roadrunner will primarily be used to ensure the safety and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. It will also be used for research into astronomy, energy, human genome science and climate change.

* Roadrunner is the world’s first hybrid supercomputer. In a first-of-a-kind design, the Cell Broadband Engine® -- originally designed for video game platforms such as the Sony Playstation 3® -- will work in conjunction with x86 processors from AMD®.

* Made from Commercial Parts. In total, Roadrunner connects 6,562 dual-core AMD Opteron® chips as well as 12,240 Cell chips (on IBM Model QS22 blade servers). The Roadrunner system has 98 terabytes of memory, and is housed in 278 refrigerator-sized, IBM BladeCenter® racks occupying 5,200 square feet. Its 10,000 connections – both Infiniband and Gigabit Ethernet -- require 55 miles of fiber optic cable. Roadrunner weighs 500,000 lbs. Companies that contributed components and technology include; Emcore, Flextronics, Mellanox and Voltaire.

* Custom Configuration. Two IBM QS22 blade servers and one IBM LS21 blade server are combined into a specialized “tri-blade” configuration for Roadrunner. The machine is composed of a total of 3,060 tri-blades built in IBM’s Rochester, Minn. plant. Standard processing (e.g., file system I/O) is handled by the Opteron processors. Mathematically and CPU-intensive elements are directed to the Cell processors. Each tri-blade unit can run at 400 billion operations per second (400 Gigaflops).

* The machine was built, tested and benchmarked in IBM’s Poughkeepsie, N.Y. plant, home of the ASCI series of supercomputers the company built for the US government in the late 1990s. IBM’s site in Rochester, Minn. constructed the specialized tri-blade servers. Software development was led by IBM engineers in Austin, Texas and by researchers in IBM’s Yorktown Heights, N.Y. research lab. Roadrunner will be loaded onto 21 tractor trailer trucks later this summer when it is delivered to Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico.

* Roadrunner operates on open-source Linux software from Red Hat.

* Energy Miser. Compared to most traditional supercomputer designs, Roadrunner’s hybrid format sips power (2.35 megawatts) and delivers world-leading efficiency – 437 million calculations per watt. IBM expects Roadrunner to place among the top energy-efficient systems later in June when the official “Green 500” list of supercomputers is issued.

* IBM is developing new software to make Cell-powered hybrid computing broadly accessible. Roadrunner’s massive software effort targets commercial applications for hybrid supercomputing. With corporate and academic partners, IBM is developing an open-source ecosystem that will bring hybrid supercomputing to financial services, energy exploration and medical imaging industries among others.

Applications for Cell-based hybrid supercomputing include: calculating cause and effect in capital markets in real-time, supercomputers in financial services can instantly predict the ripple effect of a stock market change throughout the markets. In medicine, complex 3-D renderings of tissues and bone structures will happen in real-time, as patients are being examined.

Should you further your studies?

A good read and analysis for those planning to further studies for all types of reasons.

Should you further your studies?
To remain relevant in today’s competitive job market, it is important to constantly upgrade your skills and qualifications. However, the decision to further your studies cannot be taken lightly. Ask yourself the following questions before deciding if it’s time to hit the books again…

By Melody Tan

Why do you want to further your education?

You need to have a clear objective of what you hope to achieve from taking the additional qualification. For example, if you want an MBA to get promoted and make more money, find out if companies really pay more for MBA graduates.

Can you afford the education?
You need to consider actual course costs, how you’re paying for it, as well as opportunity costs of income loss. Kevin Ng, for instance, quit his job as a Customer Service Engineer to take up a full-time Bachelor’s degree course in Business Management at SIM in 2006. The three-year course cost the 26-year-old more than $29,000. “I managed to pay for it with my savings and some help from my parents. But I had to sacrifice my monthly pay of $1,150.”

Part time or full time?

This choice is highly dependent on the amount of time and money you can spare for the course. Full-time students get to concentrate on their studies, but they need to have the income reserves as they won’t be able to work.

Sharon Lim, 30, chose to take up a part-time advanced diploma followed by a degree course in Mass Communications from MDIS a few years ago instead. She says, “It was tiring as I had to work in the day so I could pay my school fees. However, I enjoyed the course because it’s something I’m interested in.”

She had to attend classes twice a week for three hours each in the evenings, as well as fork out time to do her homework. The two courses took her about three years to complete, and cost her more than $25,000.

Which school to enroll in?
It is crucial that you invest your time, money and education in a reputable, stable and recognized school. Do your homework, look through the different school prospectuses and ask around before making your choice.

Are you mentally ready to go back to school?
Studying life is very different from work life. You have to adjust to a life of mugging for exams and completing assignments. You also have to juggle study and family commitments, with less time and less money. So make sure you’re prepared before you take the dive.

Dark night, fantastic story

Last Thursday, was assigned to attend a training on Virtualization Storage at UBI.

The presenters were from DataCore, US company developing softwares for Virtual storage solutions. The vice president of Asia was an American, Asian Business manager an Indian and engineer and presenter from Australia.

Only 1/3 of the list turned up for the seminar, including 1 female. The presenter is experienced in doing presentation as he told us he got 200++ powerpoint slides to cover within 6hs. I am shocked! The concept is quite interesting, you can read more on their website and ask me. As the presenter dwell further into the topics like I/O, buffer.. I am clueless, as I got no systems or storage background. DataCore celebrated their 10th anniversary last Februray 08 and had over 4000 clients till date and more. Their HQ in US, EMEA support in UK and Asian support in Japan.

During the seminar, had 2 tea-breaks. The pastries not bad, mini spring rolls, curry puffs, chocolate cakes, fried wanton, but my favourite were the fruit tarts. The pastry is so soft that it crumbles when hold it. Whipped cream is below, the cream is light and not too thick which I liked alot and finally topped with either Kiwi or Peaches.

After the seminar, met Kai at Plaza Singapura to catch Dark Night. Kai got a new hoot

Dark Knight action packed scenes doesn't excite me, but the story does. I loved the conspiracy involved in it. Where at the end Batman is no longer a hero.

Spoiler

Batman extraditing the Hong Kong businessman back to US.
Everyone got shocked at the scene in the Mayor's office with the police Lieutenant.
Everyone know the enemy is joker, but thats not all.
Ridiculous 180deg bike maneuvers
What joker did with the mountain pile of money

The conspiracy of the police and Joker's henchman.
Batman not a hero, as a result of his actions.

Story:5/5 Full of conspiracy
Action: 4/5

I like conspiracy themed movies, where good guys are the bad guys. The last show with such a theme was "Shooter".A similar predicament as Dark Knight. The joker played by Heath Ledger really brings the fear of joker in all of us.

Feel like in Japan but not leaving SG

Tuesday met up with Royston as this week his company need to reshuffle, thus no need to go work. Arranged to meet at Far East Plaza.

He told me to meet him at the 5th floor. Upon reaching the 5th floor, saw a long queue outside a Japanese outlet called Wasabi Tei. I took a peak inside and found it to be freaking small, like a 3-romm flat master bedroom, which could sit max 15 customers 1 time with the boss and lady boss. Royston told me this was his second time here and I would not regret for waiting so long. Yes we waited nearly 1h for the seats. Royston told me not to mind the owner eccentric attitude, just enjoy the food.

Soon its our turn, the lady boss took our orders. Royston ordered Grill Salmon + Rice, while I ordered Teriyaki Chicken + Rice and an assorted Sashimi sushis. Due to its small space, the establishment is similar to those in Japan , seen on Japan Hour. Where the chef slices the fresh cuts and serves infront of you. Well indeed the owner had some attitude problem but who cares, for such good, cheap and generous amount of food.

The shop name with its menu and pricing.

Patrons seated in a U shaped. The man is white is chef, waiter and owner. The left glass cabinet is where he keep his fresh cuts of fish like Salmon, Tuna ...

This was similar to Royston's order.

Grilled Salmon, served with thinly sliced cabbage, miso soup and bowl of rice
Quality 4/5
Quantity 4.5/5
Price $10

Teriyaki Chicken the same.
Quality 3.5/5 (No strong taste of Teriyaki, compared to the 1 i had at Sapporo Trip
Quantity 4.5/5
Price $8

Sashimi Sushi
Quality 4.5/5 (Very fresh)
Quanitity 5/5 (The boss is crazy to be so generous!!! The meat overlapped the rice
Price $15

My chicken portion was large and after was having so many sushi, could not finish my rice. Royston shared with me his piece of Salmon which was chao tah and told me it was nice. I tasted it, wah eat carbon also call nice LOL!!!

The final bill was $37, 3 dishes and 2 drinks considered very cheap considered to other Japanese restaurants.

Pros
Quality food
Generous serving
Cheap NO GST NO Service Charge, Cash payments only

Cons
Long waiting time
Cramped eating area
Not really of smiling service

During our dinner we were discussing the chef's ex occupation and his revenue model.

He maybe an ex-military regular, thus the strict and sullen face, treating his patrons as his recruits LOL
Despite the shop located at Orchard, with skyrocket rents his shop is very small. By accepting only cash payment, they avoid paying banks NET and Credit Card charges. Only his and his wife managing, thus saving on payroll. By been small he is able to focus on quality

After dinner walked around and Royston wanted a drink so went to Starbucks. Chatting about how his designers were squeezed by his boss and the turnover rate is more than Genesis. The boss know nothing about design but is a great salesperson, clinching 40++ deals to do annual reports only, excluding other projects.Inded his engineers are overworked!!!

I did not took any photos though I brought my camera, because I do not want to risk chased out of the shop without eating after waiting for nearly 1h.

Happy 21st birthday mei mei !!!

Last Sunday brought my Mum and sister for dinner at Waraku @ Katong Village, as Monday was my sister's birthday. Both of us are lovers for Japanese cruisine.

We reached the place and found it to be very small seated less than 50 customers. We were told to wait 15-20mins.

They had a wide range of dishes offered in the menu, if only i could try all except the beef dishes LOL!!! Some of the menu were seasonal only. We were in luck as they were offering a Hokkaido menu.

First up Chu-Hi Peach, what is it? Peach + Sake. First time tasted Sake, taste like vodka in my opnion.

Sis's order Crab Kaminabe. Pardon for the crude name but its Japanese for paper steamboat. Inside were crab legs, mushrooms, vegetables and the soup tasted like Sukiyaki.

One of the dishes inside the Hokkaido menu, BBQ crab. How to eat it? Simple BBQ/ grill the crab. The meat of this King/Alsakan crab is sweet and very different from our local crabs. My last visit to Hokkaido fair at Tampines Mall, the similar crab was sold $160 each!!!

My order Japnese Curry + Pork Cutlet + Rice, regular size.
!!! Warning Regular size is large even for me, so if you are a smaller eater, choose the mini!!! The rice used I assumed are top grade as the rice are real short and fat. The pork slices are thick yet juicy, but the sauce is nothing to rave about. I like strong sauces or flavours.

Mum's order Seafood fried rice. Not your typical chinese fried rice, rice fried with egg , mixed vegtables and lucky enough prawns. This dish had squid, some type of scallop/shellfish, shrimps and topped with Salmon eggs. The eggs when you burst them tasted salty.

My mum and sis enjoying the crab. The first for us to eat these types of crabs.

Lastly dessert shaped like an oysters. Vanilla ice-cream, red beans, some type of mochi (muah chee) and wafer shaped like oyster's shell.

New record and places

Last Saturday met Kai to cycle to Vivocity and decide again.

After a short rest at Vivocity, Kai decided to try cycle into Sentosa since we were there.

When we cycle till the end of the bridge, there was a typical toll station.

Kai: How much to go into Sentosa
Operator: $3
Kai: Pedestrian only $2, why cyclists pay more!

At the back happen to be a ranger/security vehicle. I jokingly told Kai they were deployed to arrest us LOL ! Then we headed back disappointed.

The Merlion Tower.

I told Kai if wanted to cycle to the new sky bridge located near Alexander.

The "Foot of Hell". Short cut, we had to carry our bikes up these steep steps about 6 storeys high. I had to rest x4 due to sheer exhausion. Imagine doing the same stuff but on a hot afternoon. Madness you could say!

The bridges and shelters at Henderson Waves. Apparently there were quite a crowd there chilling out, enjoying the moonlight. Prefect to bring your partner after a romantic dinner.

Look how high it is, average 10 storeys high !!!

Embarking the journey.

After a nerve-wrecking 10mins sky-high ride, we reach another place which is also the end of the trail.

There we cycled past "Hort Park" into an unknown path. Along the way were very old Colonial houses which looked spooky in the night! We continued the trail till we reached the rear of Kent Ridge Park. It was a short uphill attack Initial D style, but at the end AGAIN need to carry the bike up a flight of stairs.

End of the climb sheer-exhaustion trying to catch my breath.

Finally reached the carpark, whereby once during NS we were deployed there for excerise. Its one of the best deployment sites, with a scenic view !!!

Me, my machine and a tank exhibit

From there its a very challenging, dangerous steep downhill ride. Luckily we made it safely. Kai say it was still early and decided to explore further West.

Took a rest at a nearby 7-11.

Then its back home from there. The CRAZY,ARDUOUS route is listed below.

Five Rewarding Careers that Let You Have a Life

Whether you want to travel to exotic destinations, visit relatives, or simply have more time to care for loved ones, a career with flexible time off can make a big difference in your quality of life. While many Americans enjoy a mere one or two weeks of vacation time each year, some professionals spend two to three months of each year away from the job.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that the following five careers will experience some of the fastest job growth of all careers over the next decade. Each one of these career paths offers its own set of perks in addition to seasonal scheduling:
1. Resort Chef

While most food reviewers fawn over eateries in New York and London, many of the world's most innovative chefs whip up dishes at resort hotels and spas all over the world. Tourism hot spots like Aspen, Florida, and the Napa Valley rely on seasonal workers with culinary degrees to impress guests and highlight local cuisine.

In many cases, you can attend culinary degree programs during the off-season and earn a salary to offset tuition and living expenses. Some employers even offer culinary school courses as part of ongoing professional development programs. A seasonal job as a hotel cook often pays over $28,000 per year, not including the travel benefits often offered by larger employers.
2. Teacher K-12

Many teachers use the summer to catch up with family, enjoy long vacations, and complete additional online education courses. Even with three months off, many K-12 teachers earn over $41,000 per year. Changes in recruitment policies now mean that you can start a teaching job in many places before completing a degree in education.

New state and federal mandates require job applicants to complete at least a few online education courses before beginning their teaching careers. Many school districts have even invested in dedicated recruitment programs designed to help professionals from other fields earn education degrees. For retirees, a teaching career offers the chance to stay active while earning an income and enjoying summers off.
3. Fashion Designer

If you love to work hard and play hard, a fashion design career could be a perfect fit. Established designers often enjoy a few weeks of downtime following the launch of a major collection. Fashion design degree programs can help you land internships with design houses or with the organizations that stage Fashion Week events.

For fashion design professionals with low-key personalities, specializing in a particular season's clothing or a niche accessory line can help you have more time free without as much stress. Upon completion of fashion school, you can often earn more than $28,000 per year. Starting your own business, as 25 percent of designers do, can boost your income above $55,000 per year.
4. Freelance/Fill-In Paralegal

A growing number of law firms and large companies hire freelance and temporary paralegals to cover for sick or vacationing staff members. Meanwhile, some freelance paralegals with criminal justice degrees focus on just the kinds of cases that excite them. Either way, a personal paralegal practice is one of the few careers in law that offers extended vacation time without the rigors of passing the bar exam.

A career as a freelance paralegal holds the same level of risk as running any kind of small business. However, a combination of paralegal training and business savvy can result in a strong income. Most full-time paralegals report earnings of over $38,000 per year. By charging a premium for short-term service, freelance paralegals frequently make more by working less.
5. Software Developer

During the first web boom of the early 1990s, software companies relied on freelance programmers with technology degrees to ramp up quickly and meet deadlines. Today, companies from all kinds of industries rely on contract professionals with engineering degrees to handle one-time tasks or to take on outsourced specialty projects.

Online technology courses allow freelance software developers to stay up to date on the latest coding standards. Combining an online computer science degree with courses in business and marketing can help round out the skill set necessary to land big projects, especially when separated by vacation-sized gaps.
Preparing for Extra Time Off

Like the five careers examined here, most jobs that offer more than the average amount of vacation time also require:

* a higher tolerance for risk,
* an entrepreneurial spirit,
* ongoing professional development,
* time management skills, and
* money management skills.

Fortunately, training for a new career also opens the opportunity to build overall job skills. In most cases, adding a few key electives to a degree program can mean the difference between clocking in from nine to five and setting your own schedule.

General H. Norman Schwarzkopf

Yesterday Kai showed me the bio of this famous US General

General H. Norman Schwarzkopf

all info taken from Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Schwarzkopf%2C_Jr.

Some interesting extracts

One of the most remarkable incidents in a very distinguished career happened on his second tour in Vietnam in March 1970. When Schwarzkopf received word that men under his command had encountered a minefield on the notorious Batangan Peninsula, he rushed to the scene in his helicopter, as was his custom while a battalion commander, in order to make his helicopter available. He found several soldiers still trapped in the minefield. Schwarzkopf urged them to retrace their steps slowly. Still, one man tripped a mine and was severely injured but remained conscious. As the wounded man flailed in agony, the soldiers around him feared that he would set off another mine. Schwarzkopf, also injured by the explosion, crawled across the minefield to the wounded man and held him down (he was a wrestler at West Point, so he used a "pinning" technique in the process), so another could splint his shattered leg. One soldier stepped away to break a branch from a nearby tree to make the splint. In doing so, he too hit a mine, killing himself and the two men closest to him, and blowing an arm and a leg off Schwarzkopf's artillery liaison officer.

His Quotes

* "True courage is being afraid, and going ahead and doing your job."[citation needed]
* "When placed in command -- take charge."[citation needed]
* "The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it."[citation needed]
* "Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy."[citation needed]
* "Any soldier worth his salt should be anti-war. And yet there are things still worth fighting for."[citation needed]
* "Do what is right, not what you think the high headquarters wants or what you think will make you look good."[citation needed]
* "To show you what a difference retirement makes. Last year when I gave an order, 541,000 men and women jumped," he explained. "Now I can't even get the plumber to come over."[citation needed]
* "As far as Saddam Hussein being a great military strategist, he is neither a strategist, nor is he schooled in the operational arts, nor is he a tactician, nor is he a general, nor is he a soldier. Other than that he's a great military man I want you to know that."[citation needed]
* "It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle"
* "If there is grass on the field, play it."

* MY FAVOURITE !!!
"I believe that forgiving them is God's function. Our job is to arrange the meeting."

First week of work

Monday

Took train to Tiong Baru MRT station then transfer service 123. I sensed that the bus was traveling a longer journey, thus alighted and took taxi to work. Nabe short journey less than 5km, costs $8.

Reached office 9++ and only 2 staffs were there. 1 China programmer and the Finance Manager. The Finance Manager gave me a briefing on the company, products, solutions directions ... She then allocated a place for me. She mentioned that the company promoted work-life, wherelse staff can report to work any time, importantly is do whats necessary and spend more time with family. I am starting to like this place.

Soon other staffs reported to work. Sitting beside me is a pretty Malaysian girl who was previously an engineer, mai siao siao. She is now assigned to projects. Got to meet most of the management mainly around 40s.

As the night before, my team-lead and an engineer was at Data Centre doing something, so did not come to work. So i was pretty left alone.

Tuesday

Reported to work, got to meet my new team-leader, which is from Myanmar. Another 2 engineers in charge of network, 1 from India and Malaysia. The team-lead then gave me the resources and accesses to facilitate my work. I was also issued my dream-laptop IBM Thinkpad X60. Its so freaking thin and light as there's no cd-rom installed. But an external cd-rom was provided. The battery life is also amazing. That evening my team-lead to me need to go Data Centre to settle some stuffs, not settled last Monday morning.

The Data Centre Equinix is located at Ayer Rajah. The security there is indeed tight and really an eye opener for me. All visitors need escort and need to enter 4 doors before reaching the server room. Inside the server room its freaking cold and noisy. We spent close to 2hs there before heading back home.

Wednesday
Before lunch, 1 of the managers suggested visiting the CEO's wife which is also a manager. Apparently she was down with dengue fever and awarded at CGH. After lunch, we separated in 2 taxis to CGH. First time to CGH and upon reach, the PA mentioned visiting hours are over. We tried entering the ward, but the door was locked. Managed to go in, after following another visitor.

Met the CEO's wife, she looks good and recovering well. Soon the other manager came and visited her before taking a flight to Philippines. The management team are all ex-colleagues from previous companies, thus the closely knitted relations.

Thursday
Nothing much, but my team-lead had left to KL for a meeting, so most of the time spent self-learning.

Friday
By now, I had met most of the staff excluding the CEO's wife, also the Sales Manager. At around 545pm was about to pack my stuff to go home, the CEO called me and another china programmer into his office to talk, as both of us are new-comers. On his desk was a framed newspaper article like "46yos get down to business", maybe next time i would read in detail. It was a lengthy get-together session.

In brief
-Welcome onboard and told us upcoming plans, pace and expectations
-Work-life flexible work, to spend more time with family.
-Though they cannot afford to pay very well, but they try to match with various benefits and flexibilities.
-Try to make workplace comfortable and happy, so people would stay.
-lots of stress, self-learning,initiation
-prepared to travel regionally and in short notice.

Just 1 wk here, and I could feel the immense pressure.
P.S. I just gotten my school time-table, wonder how can I juggle. In 2 weeks time half of the management and engineers are going to Philipines. Only left my team-lead and me to support local customers !!!
I always give my self alot of pressure to achieve perfection and success.

Info

Hokkaido Food Fest !!!

Last Thursday met up with XX and Benson for dinner. Initailly wanted to bring them to a affordable Japanese restaurant located in CBD. We reached there, but found the stall being replaced by a new tenant, so decided to give it a try.

The restaurant is owned and run by a Japanese owner. I ordered Teriyaki Chicken while XX and Benson ordered Japanese Curry Chicken.

Teriyaki Chicken rice very tasty. The sauce is very different from what sold outside.

After breakfast, headed to Tampines mall for the Hokkaido food fair. There are many food stalls there though the area is very cramped. Some of the stalls are owned by Japanese owners, so you can guarantee authentic Hokkaido Japanese food.

Japanese ice-cream with around 10 flavours. I bought a cone for 3 flavours for $6. The flavours chose, Green Tea, Blueberry and Cherry blossom. The ice-cream not creamy like the usual.

Then there was a long queue for a Japanese Butter Manja Cake. I waited for 1h!!!
